The Pitfalls of Current Anti-Bully Policies
"Our school's anti-bullying policy isn't working!" Izzy Kalman, Nationally Certified School Psychologist, writer and lecturer, says he gets complaints like this from teachers, school counselors and parents throughout the country. They say that their anti-bully programs are making them miserable and frequently lead to increased hostilities.
Mr. Kalman, whose website www.Bullies2Buddies.com teaches kids and adults how to end bullying quickly and easily, has been warning since the Columbine shooting that anti-bully programs are likely to cause more harm than good. These programs escalate animosity between kids by encouraging them to run to the authorities whenever anyone bothers them. "The best legal way to get someone to hate you is to inform on them to the authorities, " Kalman claims.
Anti-bully programs promote intolerance by teaching kids to brand anyone who bothers them with the insulting term, "bully". They train kids to blame others for their social difficulties and to expect others to solve their problems for them, instead of taking personal responsibility. They force teachers to take precious time away from academics so that they can play judges in the petty squabbles between students. And kids discover they can manipulate adults into punishing others by simply claiming they were insulted.
Bullying takes place at all stages of life, not only between kids in school, and the worst bullying actually occurs at home. In many families, spouses and siblings bully each other almost constantly. Many of the educators and mental health professionals trying to make bullying disappear in schools do not know how to deal with it at home. Somehow they expect school kids to succeed where they themselves fail.
Kalman says that the solution to bullying is simple and is actually provided to us by our Founding Fathers in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. For the full article explaining the Constitutional solution to bullying, go to: Bullying - The Constitutional Solution
Izzy Kalman, MS, lectures nationally to mental health professionals on anger control and bullying, and recently published a book for victims, Bullies to Buddies: How to turn your enemies into friends!
