Another Rare Critic of the Anti-Bully Movement: Jerry Moore

The anti-bully movement is the most uncontroversial social movement in the history of the world. Every other social issue has people pro and con. However, try to find any critics of the anti-bully movement and you will find almost nothing, despite repeated findings that anti-bully interventions aren't working. Do a Google search for anyone saying anything against anti-bully policies and you will be amazed how little you come up with. You will always find my writing at the top of the list, and almost nothing else.

Ignorance of The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule - treat others as you would like to be treated - is the essence of all morality. Yet we learn almost nothing about it, and even those who claim to value this rule (myself included) don't often live by it. Usually, when we simply respond on the basis of our gut reactions or emotions, we are likely to violate the Golden Rule. Furthermore, the Golden Rule doesn't require us to always be nice to others.

Slobodan Milosevic -- BULLY OR VICTIM?

Slobodan Milosevic is back in the news. He is being tried for crimes against humanity by a UN war crimes tribunal.

Freedom of Speech and Cursing

One of my weaknesses is that I am not a quick thinker. This is quite a drawback for me when I am asked questions at my seminars. I often regret my answers, and later a better answer hits me, and I feel like kicking myself for not having known what to say at the right time.

Three Classes of Responses to Aggression

In my seminars, I often demonstrate how I teach people (particularly children, because it happens more among them) to respond to being hit or pushed, when the hit or push is not meant to cause injury. I ask a volunteer to push me hard, and to respond to me the way that comes naturally. After the push, I just move back next to him (or her - but more about this later) and do nothing. He stands there confused, and nothing more happens.

An Open Letter to the Terrorists of the World

I have written the following letter in all seriousness. It is my sincere attempt to help terrorists succeed in their goals and I hope you recognize that it makes sense. I believe it will create a win/win situation for both the terrorists and the rest of us. However, the solution can only be implemented by the terrorists themselves. Therefore, if you have any connection with terrorists or with those who can reach them, please pass it on to them.

Movie Recommendation: Woody Allen's "Anything Else"

I have often said that the best psychologists are comedians. They see our weaknesses and show us what we are really like. Of all the comedians, none has a more insightful grasp into human psychology than Woody Allen.

Time to Call Off the Anti-Bully Witch-Hunt

A couple of weeks ago (April 20) marked the 9th anniversary of the Columbine massacre, the event that gave rise to the most massive witch-hunt in human history, the anti-bully movement. In our zeal to prevent further Columbine-type events, our society has decided to target “bullies,” in the naïve belief that such a campaign will prevent these horrible acts. The number of States that have adopted school anti-bullying laws has grown to 35.

Movie Recommendation: Idiocracy

Laughter is the best medicine, as Reader's Digest has made everyone aware, and Idiocracy (2006; directed by Mike Judge) provides a powerful dose. Few movies have had me laughing as much as this one.

Humor: The Antidote to Anger

Everyone knows the value of humor. It helps us heal, gets us out of the doldrums and makes us stronger. As Reader's Digest has taught us so well, "Laughter is the Best Medicine." Counselors and therapists often want to know how to use humor in their work with clients. But, aside from putting on a rubber clown’s nose, no one seems to give them a clear way to do it. After a few seconds, the nose loses its novelty.
